2) Government Scholarships for Indian Students

0

Introduction

Let’s be honest for a moment.

Education in India is getting expensive. Every year, fees go up. Hostel costs rise. Books, supplies, travel—it all adds up. And if you’re from a family where every rupee counts, that pressure can feel overwhelming.

I’ve spoken to so many students who say the same thing: “I want to study, but I don’t know how my parents will afford it.”

Here’s the good news nobody tells you: The Government of India has set aside thousands of crores of rupees specifically for students like you. Not loans. Not debt. Free money that you never have to pay back.

The catch? You have to know where to look.

Every year, scholarships go unclaimed simply because students don’t know they exist. This guide is here to change that. Let’s walk through the best government scholarships available right now.

First Things First: The National Scholarship Portal (NSP)

Before we dive into individual scholarships, let me introduce you to the most important website you’ll ever bookmark: scholarships.gov.in.

This is the one-stop destination for almost every central and state government scholarship. Think of it as the Amazon of scholarships—everything in one place .

Here’s how it works:

  • One-Time Registration (OTR): You register once with your Aadhaar, basic details, and bank information.
  • One Application ID: This stays with you forever.
  • Apply for Multiple Schemes: Based on your category and course, the portal shows you what you’re eligible for.

The entire process—from application to verification to money in your bank account—happens here. No middlemen. No bribes. No “my file is stuck somewhere.” Just Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) straight to your account .

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

After years of helping students apply, here’s what I’ve seen go wrong:

  1. Incorrect bank details — One wrong digit and your money goes nowhere. Double-check your account number and IFSC code .
  2. Blurry documents — Upload clear, scanned copies. Photos of documents taken on phone cameras often get rejected .
  3. Income certificate issues — Make sure your income certificate is from the right authority and within the validity period .
  4. Missing the deadline — Set reminders. The last date is not a suggestion .
  5. Applying for multiple scholarships — You can usually only receive one central government scholarship at a time. Choose wisely .

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

  1. Go to scholarships.gov.in and click on “New Registration” .
  2. Fill in your basic details — name, date of birth, mobile number, email, Aadhaar. You’ll get an application ID and password .
  3. Login and complete your profile — Add your bank details, academic information, and category details.
  4. Select the scholarship scheme — Based on your eligibility, choose the one that fits .
  5. Fill the form and upload documents — Be careful. Be accurate.
  6. Submit and note your application reference number — You’ll need this to track your application .
  7. Follow up with your institution — After submission, your college or school needs to verify your application online. Don’t assume they’ll do it automatically. Politely remind them .
  8. Track your status — Login to the portal regularly to see where your application stands.

A Note From Us

We’ve seen what a scholarship can do.

We’ve seen a girl from a small village become an engineer because the Pragati Scholarship paid her fees. I’ve seen a first-generation learner from an ST community complete his Ph.D. because the National Fellowship gave him a monthly stipend. I’ve seen families breathe easier because they didn’t have to choose between feeding their children and educating them.

These scholarships exist for a reason. The government doesn’t want money to be the reason you stop studying. They want you to succeed. They’ve set aside funds specifically for you.

All you have to do is apply.
